On the 5th and 6th July, Madrid hosted the opening session of the World Congress of Law to be held at the end of the year in Colombia, two days that are a prelude to this event and which have placed the Spanish capital at the epicentre of world law at this time.

Organised by the World Jurist Association and the World Law Foundation, the Meeting was presided over by King Felipe VI and also featured a telematic participation by the President of Colombia, Iván Duque.

The first day of the conference paid tribute to US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away in September 2020 and whose commendable defence of gender equality and civil rights throughout her life was duly recognised.

During the second day, the International Summit on the Rule of Law was held, with the presence of presidents of supreme and constitutional courts from different countries, and prominent international jurists, reflecting on topics such as “COVID-related regulations and their effect on citizens”, “5G: privacy and cybersecurity”, “Rule of Law in the 21st century”, “Independence of the judiciary in Europe and America”, and “Press and power, a necessary balance for democracy”, among others.

Rosa Vidal, Managing Partner of BROSETA, took part in this conference as part of the round table “The development of the role of women in justice in the 21st century“, a session moderated by the President of the Editorial Board of Thomson Reuters Spain, Javier Moscoso del Prado, and with the participation of Ana Fernández-Tresguerres, notary and member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation; María Luisa Segoviano, Supreme Court judge, and Silvia López, partner at Roca Junyent Lawyers.

During the round table, the past, present and future of women in the field of law were debated, noting the evident developments in the position and leadership of women in this field, but at the same time emphasising the need to continue working to promote it.

The conference was attended by leading figures from the world of law, such as Juan José González Rivas, President of the Constitutional Court; Carlos Lesmes, President of the Supreme Court; María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, President of the Council of State; Victoria Ortega, President of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers; José María Alonso, Dean of the Madrid Bar Association, and María Eugenia Gay, Dean of the Barcelona Bar Association and President of the World Jurist Association Spain, among others.
